TY - SLIDE TI - The Online Processing of Presupposition Projection from Disjunctions T2 - CUNY Conference on Human Sentence Processing 30 A2 - Hirsch, Aron A2 - Schwarz, Florian A2 - Zehr, Jérémy AB - Early work on presupposition projection encoded asymmetric projection as a lexical property of connectives (Heim 1983), but recent literature has sought to ground projection asymmetries in processing (Schlenker 2009, Fox 2008, Chemla & Schlenker 2012): presuppositions are evaluated rapidly and immediately assumed to project. This is not obviously borne out: whether or not a presupposition in an initial disjunct ultimately projects can depend on the 2nd disjunct (Either the bathroom is in a funny place,{or Mary missed it[projection]/or there is no bathroom[NO projection]}; Partee 2005). But using visual world eye tracking, we provide evidence for Rapid Incremental Presupposition Evaluation. CY - MIT DA - 2017/// PY - 2017 ER -
